Dr Gemma Olsson - Neurosurgeon

Dr Gemma Olsson is a senior paediatric and adult neurosurgeon, with a decade’s specialist experience in brain and spine care.

Starting her career at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane after training in Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, Gemma commenced work in Sydney to further her paediatric, epilepsy and vascular interests. Having chosen to pursue paediatric work in particular with her current appointment at the Childrens Hospital at Westmead, Gemma also operates and consults at Westmead Public hospital and Westmead Private Hospital.

Gemma believes that great patient care begins with a full understanding of their journey to reach her. She believes in being upfront and honest, empowering her patients with straightforward information delivered with empathy.

She is widely recognised for both her technical and communication skills.

Dr Olsson is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) and a member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia (NSA) and The Australian Medical Association (AMA). She is a RACS State Committee member and Clinical Examiner, and an NSA Examinations Committee member.

Specialist Areas

Dr Gemma Olsson cares for patients with neurological disorders of the brain and spine and has a particular interest in the management of brain tumours. She works in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary Neuro-Oncology Team at Westmead Public Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Specialist areas include:

Paediatric neurosurgery: including hydrocephalus management, multidisciplinary spina bifida care and antenatal advice and craniofacial disorders.

Neuro-oncology for children and adults with multidisciplinary team affiliations

Vascular neurosurgery

Skull base neurosurgery (including multidisciplinary endoscopic pituitary surgery)

Multidisciplinary epilepsy

Trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm treatment

Trauma surgery (brain and spine)

Spinal surgery

Research interests include:

Brain Tumours - particularly glioma and metastasis

Surgical management of Epilepsy
